How the Immigration Department assesses applications While a review of cases is possible, the main focus is to assess the applicant. To determine how successful the application is, the Immigration Department will consider: whether the person is admissible to Australia; whether the person is likely to settle; if an application is not successful, whether the person was required to be absent from the country for more than six months; whether the applicant has previously been refused a visa before obtaining a second; whether the person is able to demonstrate an economic need to enter Australia; whether any other conditions imposed by an immigration officer/referee apply; and whether the applicant may use alternative means to travel to Australia. The Immigration Department may ask you to complete additional forms if they need to determine more than one.
